Living in a dark cupboard, Harry had always been small and skinny for his age; while Dudley, four times bigger than Harry was, was as fat and large as a pig in a wig. What greeted Harry were the screeching of Aunt Petunia and barking of Uncle Vernon, while what awaited Dudley were the piles of birthday presents which almost buried the table.

Dudley began to cry loudly. In fact, he wasn’t really crying, it had been years since he’d really cried, but he knew that if he screwed up his face and wailed, his mother would give him anything he wanted.

第一招:假哭!Cry loudly but wasn’t really crying. It had been years since sb. Had done sth. it had been years since we’d burst into tears.

对Dudley来说,“cry”是一种“策略”而不是“情绪”,你看罗琳写的,说Dudley很清楚,只要他screwed up his face and wailed,他妈就立刻缴械投降,啥都同意。screw (v.转动;拧) up his face,把脸拧巴起来?

‘Dinky Duddydums(心肝宝贝!), don’t cry, Mummy won’t let him spoil your special day!’ she cried, flinging her arms around him.

Dursley really spoiled Dudley! I don’t want to spoil your fun.

所以要我们用一句话记住spoil的两个用法:spoiling your child may eventually spoil his/her life. She cried, flinging her arms around him.

‘I ... don’t ... want ... him ... t-t-to come!’ Dudley yelled between huge pretend sobs. ‘He always sp-spoils everything!’ He shot Harry a nasty grin through the gap in his mother’s arms.

Dudley yelled between huge pretend sobs(抽泣).

He shot Harry a nasty grin through the gap in his mother’s arms. Just then, the doorbell rang.

Half an hour later, Harry, who couldn’t believe his luck, was sitting in the back of the Dursleys’ car with Piers and Dudley, on the way to the zoo for the first time in his life.

After lunch they went to the reptile house. It was cool and dark in here, with lit windows all along the walls. Behind the glass, all sorts of lizards and snakes were crawling and slithering over bits of wood and stone. Dudley and Piers wanted to see huge, poisonous cobras ['kobrə] and thick, man-crushing pythons['paɪθɑn].

你看,罗琳用的crawl(匍匐而行)and slither(蜿蜒得滑行),多么到位。

Dudley quickly found the largest snake in the place. It could have wrapped its body twice around Uncle Vernon’s car and crushed it into a dust-bin – but at the moment it didn’t look in the mood. In fact, it was fast asleep.

包裹;缠绕),并且包裹住车身之后再一发力crush it into a dust-bin,实力碾压crush,车皮秒变垃圾桶。 This snake was not in the mood to show its strength. We all have times when we’re just not in the mood to get on with work / study.

Harry moved in front of the tank and looked intently at the snake. He wouldn’t have been surprised if it had died of boredom itself – no company except stupid people drumming their fingers on the glass trying to disturb it all day long. It was worse than having a cupboard as a bedroom, where the only visitor was Aunt Petunia hammering on the door to wake you up – at least he got to visit the rest of the house.

哈利专注得看着这条大蛇look intently(一心一意,心无旁骛)at。 死于自身的原因...die of+原因,比如大部分人死于疾病like die of illness like a heart attack;如果死因是外在的事故比如earthquake,我们通常会用die from,like姨妈骗哈利他爸妈死于车祸die from a car crash。

更糟糕的是,还要承受德思礼家这类粗鲁人的骚扰,这些 stupid people简称“蠢货”总是 drumming their fingers on the glass,还记得名词drum动起来吗?

这些人哐哐砸玻璃trying to disturb it all day long,真是扰蛇清梦。 不过至少,他还能走出碗柜,在家里其他地方溜达溜达at least he got to visit the rest of the house,注意其他地方不需要说other rooms or other places,剩余的部分英文的喜欢用the rest of...,比如余生就叫“the rest of one’s life”。

The snake suddenly opened its beady eyes. Slowly, very slowly, it raised its head until its eyes were on a level with Harry’s.

It winked.

Harry stared. Then he looked quickly around to see if anyone was watching. They weren’t. He looked back at the snake and winked, too.

接下来,它慢慢抬起了头raise its head与哈利目光交汇until its eyes were on a level with Harry’s两人的眼睛在达到同一水平线,可不就是眼神相遇嘛。 然后他火速环视四周确认no one was watching,赶紧跟蛇老兄互动了一波,look back and wink。
