Though pretending that nothing peculiar occurred after letting himself into the house, Mr. Dursley could no longer deceive himself when he caught the last piece of the evening news. As is stated by the news reader, owls flying by daylight and shooting stars all over the Britain have been witnessed by many citizens. Mr. Dursley could not help wondering whether all of these were related to Potters and could hardly fall asleep when he turned it all over in his mind.

Mr Dursley might have been drifting into an uneasy sleep, but the cat on the wall outside was showing no sign of sleepiness. It was sitting as still as a statue, its eyes fixed unblinkingly on the far corner of Privet Drive.

德思礼先生drift into an uneasy sleep,怎么理解呢?

比如安逸的生活,岁月静好就叫life of ease and comfort. Mr. Dursley总算迷迷糊糊睡过去了,但是窗外的猫was showing no sign of sleepiness,一点困的迹象都没有。

为什么不直接说the cat was not sleepy? 只能说起码我们看起来,它没有表现出困,sign表示“迹象”,show no sign of sth.

It was sitting as still as a statue,这猫纹丝不动still,宛如一座雕像。

当然不是! its eyes fixed unblinkingly on the far corner of Privet Drive.

A man appeared on the corner the cat had been watching, appeared so suddenly and silently you'd have thought he'd just popped out of the ground. He was tall, thin and very old, judging by the silver of his hair and beard, which were both long enough to tuck into his belt. He was wearing long robes, a purple cloak which swept the ground and high-heeled, buckled boots. His blue eyes were light, bright and sparkling behind half-moon spectacles and his nose was very long and crooked, as though it had been broken at least twice. This man's name was Albus Dumbledore.

Dumbledore made his debut in a very handsome way.

从地里突然冒出来的!pop突然出现,比如灵光一现an idea popped out in your mind!就等于an idea appeared in a flash!

邓布利多长得也很酷炫,高高瘦瘦,而且应该活了很久很久了,所以文中说,我们的判断依据是judging by,首先the silver of his hair and beard头发白胡子白,which were both long enough to tuck into his belt 头发胡子都很长,长到可以塞进裤腰带里tuck into is belt.

打扮也很时髦,他穿着长袍long robes,披一件掩到地的紫色斗篷a purple cloak which swept the ground,(紫色可是超难驾驭的“color of nobility”;sweep扫--swept)登一双带搭扣的高跟靴子high-heeled,buckled boots。

鼻子long and crooked长长的鼻子有点歪crooked,比如a crooked street弯曲的街道;a crooked cop一个坏警察。 不就是“歪”嘛!)Dumbledore当然不是整容失败鼻子歪了,活了这么久,身经百战,大概是被打断了两次吧as though it had been broken at least twice.

He chuckled and muttered, 'I should have known.' 我就知道!'Fancy seeing you here, Professor McGonagall.'

I fancy travelling with the man I fancy to the place I fancy. Oh, it's just a fancy! 而文中这个表达Fancy seeing you here相当于Glad to see you here的高配版! My dear Professor, I've never seen a cat sit so stiffly.'

可是这一整天,又是cloaked people,又是owls flying,又是a downpour of shooting stars,简直是怎么高调怎么玩,所以她希望能从Dumbledore这里得到些确切信息,是不是You-know-who has gone! Would you care for a sherbet lemon?

'What they're saying,' she pressed on(向前推进,之表示继续说), 'is that last night Voldemort turned up in Godric's Hollow. He went to find the Potters. The rumour is that Lily and James Potter are–are–that they're–dead.'

Dumbledore bowed his head. Professor McGonagall gasped.

'Lily and James ... I can't believe it ... I didn't want to believe it ... Oh, Albus ...'

Dumbledore reached out and patted her on the shoulder. 'I know ... I know ...' he said heavily.

Professor McGonagall's voice trembled as she went on. 'That's not all. They're saying he tried to kill the Potters' son, Harry. But–he couldn't. He couldn't kill that little boy. No one knows why, or how, but they're saying that when he couldn't kill Harry Potter, Voldemort's power somehow broke–and that's why he's gone.'

Dumbledore nodded glumly.

'It's–it's true?'faltered Professor McGonagall. 'After all he's done ... all the people he's killed ... he couldn't kill a little boy? It's just astounding ... of all the things to stop him ... but how in the name of heaven did Harry survive?'

'We can only guess,' said Dumbledore. 'We may never know.'

James and Lily were killed by Voldemort.虽然罗琳刻意说They are very sad. 比如说起这个rumor:Dumbledore bowed his head. Professor McGonagallgasped. 所以Dumbledore伸出手reach out,安慰得拍拍她的肩膀pat her on the shoulder说:你的感受我懂I know。

Professor McGonagall's voice trembled as she went on.

It's–it's true?'faltered Professor McGonagall.这件事确实太令人震惊了,大家记住astounding =so surprising that it is almost impossible to believe。比如The lecture was an astounding success!

就像电影《印度合伙人》中的男主角去New York做的第一场演讲那样,他自己都不信他竟然用English做完了整场演说,虽然full of grammar mistakes,虽然with strong Indian Accent,但是it was an astounding success! 回到故事中,这个astounding的事实就是:howin the name of heaven did Harry survive?
