Here goes mine.

Three signs of something peculiar occurred to Mr. And Mrs. Dursley on a dull and grey Tuesday morning---owls fluttering and swooping, a cat reading maps, and cloaked people excitedly whispering together. Choosing to drive all of these out of his mind, Mr. Dursley concentrated on his drill business. The way of his working is quite weird because though in a good mood, he talked with others by yelling and shouting. But this ill-tempered man will soon realize what is awaiting him.

If not, refer to the handout.

当他买完甜甜小面包bun,回办公室的路上又遇到了those strangely dressed people, 看着这些鲜红翠绿的斗篷,He eyed them angrily.

原来这次,he caught a few words of what they were saying 抓到了斗篷人热烈讨论的核心词:Harry!!! Oh, good lord! His greatest fear gonna become reality.

Mr Dursley stopped dead. Fear flooded him. He looked back at the whisperers as if he wanted to say something to them, but thought better of it.

德思礼先生stop dead, “停下来,当场死亡?”No,stop dead 表示 stop suddenly,可以是人突然停下,也可以是物,比如车子开到半路熄火了the car usually stopped dead when my mum was the driver! 比如项目做到一半流产了,因为项目带头人先丧了:the project stopped dead since the leader lost his confidence.

Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. Fear flooded him!

虽然他想跟这群whispers say something, 但是thought better of it. Think better of sth. better类似的用法,还有一个词组叫know better than to do sth. 比如发现别人不想回答你的问题,you should know better than to ask one more time.

He dashed back across the road, hurried up to his office, snapped at his secretary not to disturb him, seized his telephone and had almost finished dialling his home number when he changed his mind.

那就是像罗琳这样,拆成多个并列结构use the parallel structure, 然后每个部分都用短小精悍的动作推动,dashed(猛冲)back across the road冲回马路对面,hurried up to his office 匆匆忙忙赶回办公室,snapped at his secretary 对着秘书厉声说snap at sb.(说话跟咬人似的),seized his telephone一把抓起电话,我们都替电话觉得疼,打算打给老婆。

试想,如果把dash, hurry up, snap at, seize换成了run, walk fast, shout at, take,味道就完全变了,跑得不快了,走得不急了,吼得不凶了,抓得不紧了。

This Harry may not be the one they fear.

比如下班的时候,因为他心不在焉absent-minded , he walked straight into a man wearing a violet cloak. 但是这老头虽然被撞倒在地了be knocked to the ground,却还喜笑颜开his face split into(分成,分裂成) a wide smile。

‘Don’t be sorry, my dear sir, for nothing could upset me today! Rejoice, for You-Know-Who has gone at last! Even Muggles like yourself should be celebrating, this happy happy day!’

I’m upset about the way my parents treat me。 Upset/depress sb.

The outcome really upset me considering how hard I’ve tried. But this is life, my friend. Not all efforts bear fruits, but “no pains, no gains” still holds water.

It’s really an artistic creation!

在这套书中,人人都知道You-know-who is Voldmort, 但是on most occasions, almost everyone avoids calling Voldmort by his name and would not let others speak his name out. 所以他走了,人们才会举国欢庆!even though we still don’t know why.

This is a word created by Rowling, referring to those who do not possess the power of magic and can hardly understand it.

所以在魔法世界里,we are Muggles. But in real life, never be Muggles!

The first thing he saw – and it didn’t improve his mood – was the tabby cat he’dspotted that morning.

‘Shoo!’ said Mr Dursley loudly.

The cat didn’t move. It just gave him a stern look. Was this normal cat behaviour, Mr Dursley wondered. Trying to pull himself together, he let himself into the house.

这猫不听他赶就算了,还give him a stern look! stern表示“严厉的”,可以修饰look, voice, expression,通常一位传统教导主任就是show a stern look, speak in stern voice and use stern expressions,严厉到底! Was this normal cat behaviour?
