The story of "The Marriage of the River Lord" is taken from "Ximen Bao Governs in Ye" in Records of the Grand Historian. When Ximen Bao, the newly-appointed magistrate in Ye County took office, he dressed up as an ordinary man to pay an unannounced visit around the county. He found out that the rich men, the witch and the village officials had colluded with each other to cheat the local people. They spread the rumor that the lord of the Zhang River was fond of beauty and every year a beautiful girl should be sent into the river to marry him; otherwise there would be droughts and floods. In fact, it was just an excuse for them to rake in money and prey on the people. Due to the wedding ceremony, many people were broke. Some lost their family, and some ran away from home. Ximen Bao decided to beat the greedy officials and the tyrants at their own game. On the Spring Sacrifice Day, also the river lord's wedding day, he drowned the witch, the village officials and the rich men in the river. In this way, the superstition was broken down and the bad guys were killed. Later, Ximen Bao led the people to build water conservancy projects. The problem of droughts and floods was thoroughly solved and the local economy began to flourish.
